    China increases military pressure on Taiwan: The view from Taipei

    While Taipei is not required to publicly disclose every military encounter with the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu warned in July that Beijing might be preparing to "solve the Taiwan issue" - a euphemism for taking control of the island. Chinese President Xi Jinping has not ruled out force in taking Taiwan, a democracy of 23 million people that Beijing's Communist Party claims as its own although it has never ruled the island.

    Lebanon sees record-high coronavirus cases and deaths

    Lebanon recorded its highest daily number of deaths and new infections from coronavirus as the country grapples with the aftermath of an enormous port explosion that rocked the capital, Beirut, and overwhelmed hospitals. Seven people died of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said, and 309 new cases were recorded. That brought the total number of infections to 7,121 and deaths to 87 since the start of the country's outbreak in February.
