Lebanon recorded its highest daily number of deaths and new infections from coronavirus as the country grapples with the aftermath of an enormous port explosion that rocked the capital, Beirut, and overwhelmed hospitals. Seven people died of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said, and 309 new cases were recorded. That brought the total number of infections to 7,121 and deaths to 87 since the start of the country's outbreak in February.

Violent protests gripped parts of the southern Indian city of Bengaluru late on Tuesday after thousands of protesters took to the streets over a provocative social media post about the Prophet Mohammed by a relative of a local politician, local media reported. Two people were dead and three injured after police opened fire, according to a regional news channel. Reuters was not immediately able to confirm the deaths or the number of injuries.

BEIRUT: Angry Lebanese said the government’s resignation on Monday did not come close to addressing the tragedy of last week’s Beirut explosion and demanded the removal of what they see as a corrupt ruling class to blame for the country’s woes. The blast at the Beirut port left a crater more than 100 meters across on dock nine, the French ambassador said on Twitter following a visit to the site by French forensic scientists supporting an investigation into the disaster.
